Save the cat by blake snyder6/4/2023 ![]() And that goes for whether it’s a comedy or a drama. My good friend and former writing partner, the funny and fast-typing Colby Carr, pointed this out to me one time and he’s 100% correct. “The number one thing a good logline must have, the single most important element, is: irony. ![]() Save the Cat!: The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need News that a beloved aunt has passed away. Whether it’s integral to the story or just something symbolic, hint at something dead here. At the All Is Lost moment, stick in something, anything that involves a death. But what if you don’t have an Obi Wan character? What if death isn’t anywhere near your story? Doesn’t matter. ![]() Obi Wan in Star Wars is the best example - what will Luke do now? All Is Lost is the place where mentors go to die, presumably so their students can discover “they had it in them all along.” The mentor’s death clears the way to prove that. I started to notice how many great movies use the All Is Lost point to kill someone. “But here’s my little trade secret that I put into every All Is Lost moment just for added spice, and it’s something that many hit movies have. ![]()

The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell6/4/2023 ![]() ![]() In Henry’s flashbacks, he explains how he, his father (also named Henry), his mother Martina, and his sister Lucy were a comfortable, wealthy family living in their mansion in Chelsea. After reading this article, Libby tracks down its author, Miller Roe, and the two attempt to investigate what happened to the other members of the household. This baby, originally named Serenity Lamb, was Libby. A baby was found in a crib upstairs, alive, clean, and well fed. One day, in 1994, three adults-Henry Lamb, Martina Lamb, and David-were found dead by poisoning, presumably due to a cult-related suicide pact. ![]() Libby finds an article that explains how a group of adults and children lived in the house. She quickly learns that the house has a dark past, and the novel follows Libby as she unravels the house’s mystery. Libby doesn’t know much about her biological family because she was adopted as a baby. Alternating third-person chapters follow Libby and Lucy’s lives as adults, alongside Henry’s memories of growing up in a mansion in Chelsea in the late 1980s and early 1990s.Īt the beginning of the novel, Libby is a 25-year-old woman living in London when she receives a letter indicating she has inherited a mansion in Chelsea that belonged to her biological family. ![]() The Family Upstairs tells the stories of three characters: Libby, Lucy, and Henry. ![]() Virals book 66/4/2023 ![]() It makes perfect sense that a book would find an avenue to explosive popularity as a result of that collective experience, especially given TikTok’s compulsively consumable format. From an anthropological standpoint, it makes sense to me that the global experience of communal isolation would lead to an unprecedented industry revolution via social media-in this case the thriving communities of BookTok, BookTwt, and Bookstagram. It’s fairly impossible for me to wrap my mind around any of this. What has the experience of your work going viral been like for you? The Atlas Six has already received a hugely positive, worldwide response. And thanks for having me! I’m excited to be here. Kidding! Maybe magic, academia, conflict. Hi Olivie, we’re beyond excited to have you on the site today to chat all about your sensational new novel, The Atlas Six but before we start, how would you describe this book in just three words? ![]() ![]() ![]() The second book begins about the time disaster strikes, and takes us on a wild ride to find out who lives and who dies.Īnd, this is where the story picks up serious steam! This book is faster-paced and action-driven. ![]() I will try to keep from mentioning which of the characters survive.īook I of The Light In The Darkness focused primarily on the days before the doomed ship was, well, doomed. If that spoils the book, consider it spoiled. I’d respond, “No, it’s about the Lusitania,” every time with the same eyeroll. I mean… umm… SPOILERS, DEAD AHEAD!Ĭomplete tangent: I had a shirt in high school that said “The boat sank… get over it.”Įvery day, TONS of classmates (and even some teachers) would ask, “Is that about Titanic?” They all had the same shocked, almost offended, expression. OK! Everybody is back? Good! Let’s get into The Light In The Darkness: A Titanic Novel, Book Two (Parts IV-V). Welcome back, one and all, to the saga that is my review of Carla Robinson’s The Light In The Darkness: A Titanic Novel! In case you’re just joining us… seriously, where have you been?!Ĭatch up on The Light In The Darkness: A Titanic Novel, Book One (Parts I-III) and we’ll be waiting for you when you get back! ![]() Finders Keepers by Nicole Williams6/3/2023 ![]() ![]() The girl(who I won’t name since the summary didn’t), is really his perfect match. For a character who dismissed and mocked Jesse and Rowen for being in love, Garth turns out to be a secret romantic and he had me swooning with a lot of his lines. Inside he’s broken from years of parental abuse and believes he’s worthless. He’s this tortured soul who doesn’t let many people close, who hides behind the sarcasm and the womanizing attitude. ![]() ![]() To go from where he started in Lost and Found to where he ended up in Finders Keepers, there’s so much growth and development there that it was amazing to read. The friendship between Garth and Jesse in Near and Far was one of my favorite parts of the book and there’s always been mentions of Garth’s less than stellar home life. I was really excited to find out this was happening. Now, in Finders Keepers, we get his story. Garth Black was introduced in Lost and Found, and we got more of him in Near and Far. ![]() Rebel of the sands6/3/2023 ![]() ![]() It was the perfect ending and that chapter alone made up for any sins the rest of the novel had. It didn’t answer all the questions but it didn’t leave you burning and angry for everything unanswered. The final chapter was probably one of my favourite series conclusions I have ever read (just behind A Conjuring of Light and Our Dark Duet) because it tied up the whole entire three books in an expertly crafted way, summarising the rebellion, the uprising, the lives lost and where Miraji could go from there. I’m going to start at the end (spoiler-free) because I want to be super positive about this. KEY WORDS: Middle-Eastern Fantasy, rebellions, djinn, perfect conclusion, perfect couple. Who will lead, who will triumph, who will live and who will die? Here begins the final battle for the throne. Now Amani must prove that she’s not just a desert girl any more, that she’s learned a few tricks since then. Then foreign armies begin advancing across desert plains and the Sultan starts hunting the rebels through the streets of Izman. Except Amani, and it’s up to her to protect the survivors.īut how can one girl save a whole rebellion? The rebels are crushed: most are captured, burned out or dead. Once, there was a desert under seige, and no one to defend it. Name: Hero at the Fall (Rebel of the Sands #3) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I’m tied to Maggie and Pauline, though I don’t know why. I’m tied-it seems-to this house, this street, this town. ![]() I’m the reflection behind them in the glass, the feeling of fear in the cellar. The residents know me as the noises in the house at night, the creaking on the stairs. From beneath the house on Water Street, I’ve watched the danger swell. Door County, it seems, is swallowing the young, right into its very dirt. Girls started vanishing in the fall, and now winter’s come to lay a white sheet over the horror. Tobacco road novel review6/2/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Lov refuses and rather cruelly begins eating raw turnips in front of Jeeter and his starving mother, wife, and daughter. When Lov tries to convince Pearl’s father Jeeter Lester to talk with her, Jeeter makes his help conditional on getting some of those turnips. But even that discussion quickly turns to turnips. Well, and the fact that the forty-something Lov couldn’t get his 12-year old wife Pearl to share his bed with him. The first five chapters seemed to be about nothing but God and a bag of turnips. (I also immediately thought of the amazing song Tobacco Road by Lou Rawls.) Needing something for that day’s commute, I took a chance.Īs I listened I wasn’t sure what to make of the book. When I was browsing Audible recently looking for books to listen to on my commute I stumbled across Tobacco Road and vaguely remembered it was on the Modern Library list of Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century. But that wouldn’t adequately convey what an amazing book it is. ![]() I could just leave this review of Tobacco Road by Erskine Caldwell blank and refer you back to the blog post headline. ![]() Bi book julia shaw6/2/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s just that I didn’t find myself liking her as a writer, her “Buzzfeed” tone, and her inadvertent but irritating ways of urging bisexual readers to do certain things in order to feel more bi or to benefit the greater bi cause. Shaw’s focus on intersectionality, her intentional inclusion of trans and nonbinary bi people, and her acknowledgment that bi spaces still have work to do in terms of racial diversity, were all spot-on. ![]() She wrote it simply because it “didn’t exist,” so now the only new popular book dedicated to bisexuality is, in my opinion, not that great. My shelves desperately needed some color, and I’d never heard of any other books specifically focusing on bisexuality.Īfter reading it, I’m wondering if my fellow bisexual readers would be better off without Shaw’s bi guide. I was so thrilled to discover Bi: The Hidden Culture, History, and Science of Bisexuality by Julia Shaw last Nonfiction November. ![]() |
