Mark twain book life on the mississippi6/12/2023 But America was no longer the land in which men and women from the Old World might find political and spiritual freedom to accompany social and economic opportunity. It still affirmed the idea that American life could be perennially renewed and thereby invigorated. By the late nineteenth century, this myth was changing. Acquisition and consumption thus became the means to achieve happiness, purpose, and even salvation.įor centuries, Americans, to say nothing of Europeans, had looked upon the New World as a garden of plenty, a veritable heaven on earth, where all human needs would be fulfilled and all human desires satisfied. The circulation of money and the exchange of goods were at the foundation of its aesthetic and moral sensibilities. Increasingly disconnected from traditional family and community life, and existing in opposition to old-fashioned religious and social values such as self-restraint and self-denial, hard work and delayed gratification, repression and guilt, this new culture emphasized luxury and indulgence. At its heart was the quest for wealth, security, comfort, and pleasure. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, a new culture emerged in the United States. Literary scholars have long interpreted “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” as a fable of populism, but it is more than that: It is a celebration of consumer culture as the the very meaning of America, this bright and shining land where men and women are happy to deceive themselves into believing a fairy tale, which, as the Wizard of Oz himself admitted, every sensible person ought to know is untrue.

Solenoid mircea cartarescu6/12/2023 The novel is grounded in the reality of late 1970s/early 1980s Communist Romania, including long lines for groceries, the absurdities of the education system, and the misery of family life. One character asks another: when you rush into the burning building, will you save the newborn or the artwork? On a broad scale, the novel's investigations of other universes, dimensions, and timelines reconcile the realms of life and art. Based on Cartarescu's own role as a high school teacher, Solenoid begins with the mundane details of a diarist's life and quickly spirals into a philosophical account of life, history, philosophy, and mathematics. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF 2022 by the New Yorker, Publishers Weekly, The Financial Times, Words Without Borders A highly-acclaimed master work of fiction from Cartarescu, author of Blinding: an existence (and eventually a cosmos) created by forking paths. The Mark of the Rope by Miriam Lynch6/11/2023 But synthetic ropes also possess certain disadvantages, including slipperiness, and some can be damaged more easily by UV light. Synthetic fibre ropes are significantly stronger than their natural fibre counterparts, they have a higher tensile strength, they are more resistant to rotting than ropes created from natural fibres, and they can be made to float on water. Rope may be constructed of any long, stringy, fibrous material, but generally is constructed of certain natural or synthetic fibres. Rope is thicker and stronger than similarly constructed cord, string, and twine. Ropes have tensile strength and so can be used for dragging and lifting. A coil of right-handed laid three-strand ropeĪ rope is a group of yarns, plies, fibres, or strands that are twisted or braided together into a larger and stronger form. House of the rising sun kristen painter6/11/2023 This was also the first book I’ve read by Kristin Painter. However, sometimes that’s exactly what the doctor ordered. It’s more urban fantasy with a romantic bend than I’m usually into. House of the Rising Sun isn’t my typical book. This book was sent for me to review by the publisher. It’s time for revenge-and to take up the mantle of the city’s Guardian. He rarely works a real job, spends most of his nights with a different human woman, and resides in a spectacular Garden District mansion paid for by retired movie star Olivia Goodwin, who has come to think of him as an adopted son, providing him room and board and whatever else he needs.īut when Augustine returns home to find Olivia’s been attacked by vampires, he knows his idyllic life has comes to an end. Augustine lives the perfect life in the Haven city of New Orleans. Beaches II by Iris Rainer Dart6/11/2023 I found it disappointing that we missed so much of Nina’s childhood, and she very quickly grows up throughout the book, and then into a teenager, where she quite promptly wreaks havoc in Cece’s life. The author waffles on for pages, ignoring whole passages of time, and using the alternating past/present chapters formula that was used in the first book. It reads very much like a soap opera, but at times, the author came across like a low rent Jackie Collins. It’s totally unnecessary and didn’t need to be written. I have recommended the first book, but I would advise staying away from this book, unless you really, really loved the first book. So I was looking forward to reading the sequel and following on with Cece’s life. I had really enjoyed Beaches and found that it had changed my opinion about the film. In such a short novel it's already hard to get to know the numerous characters, so spending more time with just a couple of them might've tightened things up a bit. The author does a great job of gradually weaving the story together (though much of the book is spent on setting up the concept), and it'll be interesting to what everyone's motivations are and how certain powers will be utilized.Ī couple of quibbles: while I like all the characters so far and don't really mind the multiple narrators, I think reducing the number of POVs would have made the narrative stronger. The idea is incredibly intriguing, and I liked the descriptions of focus/out of focus, the kids' purple eyes, the wondrous flying, the injections of humor, and the beautiful night when Jess sees the frozen world for the first time, with the air filled with suspended raindrops. What's going on? Why is the town like this? What do the evil darklings want with Jessica Day, the new girl in town? What a cool concept! For one secret extra hour each night, a small group of teenagers is able to move about freely-even though the rest of the town around them is frozen in time. Snow Twink by Sue Brown6/10/2023 Gruff was such a sweet daddy and it made my heart melt how he was always telling Lyle to eat his food or to take care of himself. He had laid eyes on Lyle once and he already was referring to him as his boy and being super possessive over him and I absolutely loved that. Third, Gruff was such a good daddy to me. Second, I really liked that the snow white twist is Lyle and a family of seven brothers who are all gay and daddies (instead of Snow White and the seven dwarfs), that's such a fun twist on the subject and i'm excited to read about everyone else in the family. Sadly the plot of the book just lost me after a while. It really was a fascinating premise and it made me want to read more of the book. We had Lyle lost in the forest and he was sure he was going to die and praying for a daddy to save him. They fall in love and realize that they would be good in a daddy and boy relationshipįirst, this book really fascinated it with its start. Gruff takes care of Lyle and saves him from death. He picks Lyle up and brings him to his family's house. Gruff is taking a walk in the forest and he finds Lyle there. Lyle is lost in a forest on his eighteenth birthday. And I had a good time reading it, but sadly it wasn't all that I wanted it to be. A MM Snow White retailing with daddy kink? Yes please give it to me. |
